The City of Toronto proclaims June 5 – 11, 2016 Reach for the Rainbow Week
The Annual Reach for the Rainbow Conference, held during Reach for the Rainbow Week as proclaimed by the City of Toronto, is one of the largest continuously operating single day camp conferences in the nation. The Conference is a one-day training opportunity which promotes inclusion and the urgent needs of children and youth with disabilities in sport and recreation across Ontario. During the day-long event participants attend four intensive sessions and hands-on workshops on a wide variety of disability related topics for counsellors, camp and community recreational program staff. Reach for the Rainbow provides practical strategies to support individuals and a fantastic integration toolkit to create rewarding experiences for people with disabilities in integrated environments.
This year over 200 attendees from across Ontario will converge on Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus to share and learn best practices in the field of disability. Keynote Speakers Olympian Ryan Fry and Paralympian Tracy Schmitt will also be in attendance. Ryan made his Olympic debut at Sochi 2014 as part of the team that won Canada’s third straight Olympic gold medal in men’s curling. Ryan has been recently named as Reach for the Rainbow’s Ambassador of inclusion in sport and recreation. Despite being a 4 way amputee Tracy has climbed mountains in Nepal, captained 110 foot tall ships in the Eastern Atlantic and was a bronze medalist as a Paralympian athlete in alpine skiing. She recently embarked on a Paralympic Sailing Campaign for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, Brazil!
